AMAG Promotes Chris Randall and Expands Sales and Technical Support Teams

As we make more changes to reflect our growing customer base and better serve our integrators, consultants and end users, AMAG is excited to announce a promotion and new additions to the team.

Chris Randall, Director of Sales West

Chris Randall has been promoted to Director of Sales – West. Chris will manage the Southwest, Pacific Northwest and Western Canada territories. In his new role, he’ll be working closely with his team to drive growth, communicate the AMAG message, and educate our customers about the Symmetry platform and our new product offerings. He will be managing four people including Sara Griffiths and Laurie Ingram, and two others that we are currently looking to fill.

Chris started at AMAG in August of 2015 as the Regional Sales Manager for the Southwest region. During that time, he has successfully managed the region, grown the dealer and end user account base and successfully integrated the Mountain States region which was added to the Southwest region in 2017.

Laurie Ingram, Northwest Regional Sales Manager

AMAG welcomes Laurie Ingram as the Northwest Regional Sales Manager. Laurie comes to us from Protection 1 and will be reporting to Chris Randall, Director of Sales, West as he expands his team.

Laurie has worked in the security industry for more than 20 years, primarily in the Dallas/Fort Worth market and recently relocated to the Pacific Northwest. She has over 15 years of experience working for major integrators and monitoring providers to drive growth and RMR with multi-location national account customers. Her tenure also includes over five years of experience working for a software development company to support and sell central station automation software, cloud-based monitoring software and personal safety applications.

Jason Nilles, Regional Sales Manager – Western Canada

Jason Nilles joins AMAG as Regional Sales Manager – Western Canada with over twenty-years of experience in the security industry as well as a few relationships within the AMAG family. He will be reporting to Chris Randall on Team West .

Jason began his sales career working with Southern California integrator, Greater Alarm. After which, he managed the US & Canada sales channels for Bioscrypt as their Director of Sales, where he partnered closely with AMAG. Jason then developed the North American channel for Avigilon, before he moved to Datastrip, prior to three subsequent acquisitions, the last being Blackboard, where he has been the last three years.

Nicole Palumbo, National Account Manager

AMAG introduces Nicole Palumbo as a new National Account Manager who will support national account resellers in the East. She will report to Director of National Accounts, Ken Takahashi.

Nicole began her career in the security industry at DVTel as inside sales and support and was an integral part of the forward facing sales team that interfaced with new and existing customers. Following her seven years at DVTel, Nicole ran the sales division of FST Biometrics where she developed and presented sales and marketing material of their new technology of frictionless access control and in-motion facial/biometric analysis.

Horgan

Tom Horgan, Applications Engineer

Tom Horgan joins AMAG as the new Applications Engineer for the Mid-Atlantic & Federal Government. Tom recently joined AMAG from Convergint. He has been in the industry for many years and has extensive access and video experience with most of the major brands.

Moses

Moses Johnson, Tier 3 Technical Support Engineer

Moses Johnson is AMAG’s new Tier 3 Technical Support Engineer. Moses is located in the Charlotte, NC area. He will be supporting several key customers near and around Charlotte as well as providing Tier 3 support for escalated issues. Moses comes to AMAG from a Hardware and Software Firewall manufacturing company as a Senior Solutions Engineer.

Red Nose Day Generates Lots of Laughs

COO Howard Johnson congratulates Alex Dixon for winning the Tewkesbury office’s Best Decorated Nose contest.

Laughter could be heard throughout the hallways of the Tewkesbury, Torrance and Burlington offices as employees were seen wearing red noses in support of Red Nose Day. Red Nose Day uses the power of laughter and community to help end child poverty.

Tewkesbury, UK employees bought red noses and were entered into a prize drawing. But it didn’t stop there. The office got creative and held a Best Decorated Red Nose competition. The theme was sports, to coincide with Sport Relief, the organization running this year’s efforts in the UK. Applications Services Analyst Alex Dixon, was the lucky winner!

Employees in the Torrance and Burlington offices purchased red noses and held a bake sale to raise money.

In 1985, Comic Relief launched in the United Kingdom with the goal of using comedy to raise money and help to create a world free from poverty. The first Red Nose Day was held in 1988, and millions of people participated that first year. It’s grown and has raised over $1 billion globally. Red Nose Day has raised over $100 million to help young people in need in America since 2015. The money has helped more than 8 million children in the US, Latin America, Asia and Africa by feeding children, providing medical care and educational services.

Sport Relief
Sport Relief is when the British public comes together to get active, raise money and change lives. They planned a whole week of activity from 17th to 23rd March 2018. People are encouraged to get active, while supporting those living with mental health issues and provide healthcare for mothers and babies. Proceeds help those at risk of trafficking or domestic violence and help end malaria.

Bruce Pontier joined AMAG as a new addition to the Business Development team dedicated to the new incident and case management solution and supporting the Secure Solutions channel. Bruce resides in New Orleans and will focus on growing the business and developing new opportunities throughout North America. Reflecting on 2017

Another year is almost over and I cannot believe how fast time flies. I want to thank you for your loyalty, feedback and support. It’s been a big year! It started off naming Kurt Takahashi as our new president in January and continued with the development of new solutions and integrations.

At AMAG, we make it a point to listen to our customers and deliver products and solutions that meet your needs. As a result, AMAG has further evolved this year with the newly released Symmetry CONNECT identity and access management platform. This product, along with our Symmetry GUEST visitor management system has been a game changer for the company. We are proud of our access control and video management products, and feel they are the best in the industry, however, our CONNECT and GUEST offerings shift the focus to securing identities. As our tech savvy customers know, securing identities is critical to properly mitigating risk and meeting compliance requirements.

As the industry migrates to mobile, AMAG has developed Symmetry Blue, our new bluetooth reader that allows organizations to utilize smartphones to open doors. We expect to see the education market make the move towards mobile to adapt to millennials and the changing marketplace. As organizations upgrade their readers, we will see a wide adoption of this technology.  

Next year will be an even more exciting year. Watch for the release of several new products, including Symmetry Access Control V9 and the M4000 Controller. We will also be adding a brand new technology to our product line up in early 2018.

It’s been an exciting year, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of our fantastic and loyal customers. We truly appreciate each and every one of you, and hope to always work hard to earn your business every day.

Building People Builds Great Companies

Building a great company doesn’t happen overnight; it takes time, perseverance, commitment and great, hard working people. You can’t have a great company without great people.

So, how do you build people and a great company?

Cast a Vision

First, a clear vision must be created and communicated to build a great company. Where do you see the company in one year? Five years? 10 years? Set goals, write them down and ACT. Communicate the goals several times throughout the year to your employees and ask for input.  Clarify that each and every employee plays a role in the success of the vision…because they do.

When you hit a bump in the road, take a step back and reflect. What went wrong? Remove your ego, emotions and determine, what can we do better? How can we improve? Answer those questions, revise the goals and continue to move forward.  

Believe in the Vision

Belief in the vision is the key to success. However, everyone must make that decision for themselves. There will be plenty of peaks and valleys along the way, but if you have made the important decision to believe in the vision, you can ride the peaks and work through the valleys toward the common goal.

The simple truth is that it’s up to each person to decide to buy in. It is not the leader, president, department head, etcetera’s, responsibility to make an employee happy, it’s really up to the employee.

The brutal reality is that some may not believe in the vision, and that’s okay. If an employee doesn’t believe in what they are doing, they won’t be effective…or happy. As a leader, I want my employees to be excited about coming to work everyday. If they are not, it’s okay for them to move on. It’s not okay to stay on board, not buy in and be disruptive..    

Build People

You can have the best product in the world, but if you don’t have the right people in place, your company won’t be successful.

PeopleAtTableThe right person in the right role, doing the right work, can mean the difference between success and failure. Finding the right person takes time and patience. But when you find the right person, don’t hesitate.

Like a family, affection, acceptance, accountability and appreciation must all be present. It’s not easy with the the day-to-day grind, but as a leader, it’s critical you base yourself with these elements in mind. Your people will know you care.  

Everyone is different, so helping employees situationally helps them reach their potential.  Understanding that everyone doesn’t learn the same way or is inspired in the same manner helps ground your relationship. Take the time to get to know your employees and what motivates them.

Everyone needs to be held accountable. A workplace without expectation provides little value to anyone. Knowing what’s expected allows one to succeed. Everyone wants to know if they are doing a good job so feedback is important. Expectations and accountability helps measure an employee’s success and provides clear direction and goal setting.

Growing leaders within the organization has rewards and provides connectivity throughout the company. Great domain expertise is invaluable and promoting from within demonstrates an appreciation for looking wider across the organization. Employees see you are willing to promote and work harder when they know a promotion is possible  However, looking for talented people outside the organization can provide new ways of working and refreshing new perspectives.

Building a great company is not easy; building people is even harder. But when done correctly based on a common vision, the combination of people with different temperaments, talents and conviction coming together will bring incredible synergies. When these work in harmony, there is nothing that cannot be accomplished.

New General Data Protection Regulations for Organizations with EU Operations

davidellaOrganizations using AMAG’s Symmetry Security Systems throughout the European Union [EU] are preparing for the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which take effect from May 2018. GDPR will require organizations who control or process personal data from EU residents to obtain consent from employees, visitors and contractors for data stored in physical access control systems. Organizations will need to define why the data is needed and when it will be removed. The new regulations reflect the cloud hosted nature of many current information systems, but also have implications for on premise installations which are typical of security systems. Fines for non-compliance are steep – up to 4% of annual global revenue – so these are regulations which organizations must take seriously.

Multi-national organizations with a single access control system spanning North America and Europe will potentially be affected by the new regulations, as a database held on premise by an organization in North America will be subject to the new regulations in the same way. If a third party organization such as a security integrator is either hosting the server or managing it on a day to day basis, there are potential implications for that third party, even if they are not situated in the EU.

Access control systems are capable of holding extensive levels of personal data and as with previous regulation, organizations need to ensure that the data held is relevant and justifiable. It is easy for an organization to import data from an HR system which is not directly necessary to the specific security application. Retention periods, particularly for former employees, contractors and visitor’s personal data, also need to be considered.

GDPR-800x300An important new aspect of the GDPR regulation includes data from which a person’s location can be calculated. While this is presumably targeted at web applications which track cell phone location, physical access control systems do hold data related to who has gone where and when, so the responsible parties within an organization need to take this into account. As with any new regulation, it is unclear how this will be interpreted in a real-world scenario.

GDPR broadens the definition of ‘personal data’ to mean anything that could identity a person. For example, an email address, home address, job title or type of car one drives. Other identifiers could include gender, political views, biometric information and personal interests.

There is a strong link between GDPR and cyber security since security of the data being held is understandably seen of great importance under the regulations. It is important that AMAG customers have hardened their system using IT best practices and considered using the encryption mechanisms within the Symmetry system.

With web based applications in mind, the regulations now insist that people explicitly agree for their personal data to be held by a system – typically by proactively ticking a box in a sign-up screen which must be empty by default. How that will be interpreted for the systems of organizations which require to hold personal data such as HR and payroll systems – and security systems – is not yet totally clear, and statements in employee terms and conditions of employment may still be sufficient. Visitor Management systems need to be considered too, as some personal data of visitors either in a Symmetry database or as video will also normally be held.

Video Management Systems, and the retention periods for storage of video data fall under the GDPR regulations as well. As with all personal data recorded by business systems, as long as there is a genuine need for the data to be held for a given length of time, and the systems have been considered and recorded by the organization’s data protection officer in line with the new regulations, there should be no major implication for the Symmetry user in terms of the continuation of their physical security arrangements.

AMAG certified resellers with customer sites in Europe, and security managers in Europe should familiarize themselves with the new regulations and co-ordinate with each organization’s data protection team to ensure that their activities are fully compliant.
